News Update | Industry Revival in Focus: PM Cha Shramik Yojana Implementation Discussed for Darjeeling, Terai and Dooars
Siliguri/Darjeeling, June 2: A high-level meeting was held on Monday to discuss the implementation of the PM Cha Shramik Yojana (PMCSY) and several key issues concerning the tea industry across the Darjeeling hills, Terai and Dooars region.
Addressing the meeting, leaders highlighted that the tea industry remains the largest employment-generating sector in North Bengal, while concerns were raised over the condition of tea gardens and workers in the region. Discussions focused on reviving the tea sector, improving worker welfare and ensuring better implementation of labour-related policies.
The PM Cha Shramik Yojana, announced in the Union Budget 2021-22, aims to improve healthcare, education and welfare for tea garden workers, particularly women and children. The state government announced plans to implement the scheme and address long-standing issues affecting tea garden workers.
Key discussions also centered around minimum wages, implementation of new labour codes, worker rights, PF-related issues and improving living conditions for workers employed in tea gardens and Cinchona plantations.
Another major focus of the meeting was protecting the identity of Darjeeling Tea through stronger enforcement of Geographical Indication (GI) protection, Mandatory Certificate of Origin (CoO) norms and implementation of new certification mechanisms to prevent misuse of the Darjeeling Tea brand.
Participants also urged the Tea Board to implement development and promotion schemes aimed at strengthening the tea industry and ensuring long-term sustainability in the region.
The meeting was attended by Union and state leaders, Members of Parliament, MLAs, Tea Board officials and senior government representatives.
Speaking after the meeting, leaders reiterated their commitment towards reviving the tea industry and securing the future of tea garden workers across North Bengal.
