Siliguri | 21 May 2026
On the occasion of International Tea Day, Raju Bista attended the Golden Jubilee celebration marking 50 years of the Siliguri Tea Auction Committee (STAC) and inaugurated its newly built modern office in Siliguri.
Speaking at the event, the Darjeeling MP described tea as an inseparable part of the history, culture, livelihood, and identity of North Bengal. He stated that the tea industry supports nearly 30 lakh families across the Darjeeling hills, Dooars, and Terai regions.
Highlighting the global reputation of North Bengal tea, Bista said that Darjeeling Tea, often referred to as the “Champagne of Teas,” along with the CTC and orthodox teas of Dooars and Terai, continue to strengthen India’s tea industry worldwide.
Established in 1976, the Siliguri Tea Auction Committee became the world’s largest CTC tea auction centre by 1982. Raju Bista praised STAC for playing a vital role in maintaining transparent auctions, fair competition, proper price discovery, and market access for tea producers.
He also welcomed STAC’s move towards digital transformation through modern auction systems, digital processes, real-time market information, and stronger buyer-seller connectivity.
The MP further stressed the need to ensure dignity, better wages, healthcare, and education for tea garden workers, especially women workers who contribute significantly to the industry.
Raju Bista congratulated STAC Chairman Arun Periwal and the entire STAC team on completing 50 successful years of service to the tea sector.
